Follow the Money and Open Data: Mapping Assets, Building Synergies

This event will gather individuals who work at the intersection of open data and transparency & accountability to map and connect current initiatives in following-the-money, explore potential collaboration, and build synergies in ensuring more transparent and accountable governments, donor institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector.

The Follow the Money Network aims to “support and strengthen the community of activists and advocacy organisations pushing for the transparency that is needed for citizens around the world to “follow the money”. Recent events have underscored the importance of this advocacy, with the leak of the Panama Papers implicating several government officials across the globe and publication of Web Foundation’s Open Data Barometer report which highlights the fact that only 1% of company registers globally is published as open data.

Our aim for this event is strengthen the Follow the Money Network by:
• developing a common understanding of the current state of the anti-corruption debate
• Increasing participants’ awareness of the challenges each other face, in the changing range of issues in anti-corruption work and keeping governments accountable.
• Improving the ability of network members to share knowledge in overcoming challenges

The agenda is being designed as a diverse set of participant-driven discussions. Sessions will be dialog- and outcome-oriented rather than presentation or lecture format. The agenda is malleable. Sessions will be proposed and moved around to accommodate requests by both participants and facilitators.
