Access to ESRI Shape files

Just now I realized once again how useful it would be if frictionless-py could also read Shape files. I wanted to create an issue about this, but then I realized that I had apparently already done so myself three years ago: Feature Request: read ESRI shape files · Issue #1583 · frictionlessdata/frictionless-py · GitHub This would be really useful both for describing the fields (shape files only allow 10 characters for column names) and for checking the data with frictionless validate.

Is there anyone else interested in that topic?

Yesterday I finally found time to finish my work on this feature. If you want to try it, you can find the branch here: GitHub - jze/frictionless-py at feat/shapefile-format · GitHub

To try it you obviously need a shape file. If you don’t have one to hand right now, you’ll find a small one here: Lichtsignalanlagen.zip (traffic lights in the north German town of Elmshorn).

Now you can describe that file:

frictionless describe --json Lichtsignalanlagen.zip

And you can extract data from it:

frictionless extract Lichtsignalanlagen.zip

After editing the table schema you can also validate shape files or extract fields containing dates (usually in strange formats and not ISO-8601) as dates (not in this example file).

I hope that the pull request will be accepted in a not-so-far future.
