CKAN Ecosystem Update, October 2026

Hi all,

Looks like the Monthly Live took the month off, so we thought we’d bring a bit about the ecosystem here. First, a quick one from @amercader_2 : CKAN 2.11.7 and 2.10.12 land on Wednesday, 28 October with security fixes, so keep an eye out.

Now for the new part. The Insights dashboard got a new Active only toggle. Every portal now carries a status: active, dormant (quiet for six months or more) or unreachable. Flip the toggle and the sleepy ones step out of the charts.

We flipped it expecting a big change. Spoiler alert: in percentage terms, the charts barely moved. Most of the portals that drop out don’t report a CKAN version, so the version charts were never counting them in the first place. The picture we’ve been sharing all along still holds.

What the toggle does show is where the sleepy portals live: mostly on the older releases. 2.7 and 2.8 shrink a lot with the toggle on, while 2.9 and newer hardly change. And the portals on end-of-life releases that stay in the chart are very much alive. People still add data to them, which means someone is around to do the upgrade.

Dozens of portals upgraded in the last couple of months, and a few jumped straight from releases way back.

CKAN 2.12 is off to a nice start. In less than two months it has found its way onto more than a dozen portals, and not all of them took the short hop from 2.11. Some came over from 2.9, and one came all the way from 2.7.

Next week’s patches will be a nice little test. Portals on 2.11 and 2.10 will show as “behind” for a while, and we’ll keep an eye on the weekly chart to see how quickly everyone catches up.

One last thing. We’re also seeing a new wave of extensions built just for 2.12, and we’ll take a closer look at those next time. If you’re working on one, drop a link in the thread so we don’t miss it..

Until next time
