Rufus, if you are going to Rome, I suggest you talk to Marco Fioretti about the Digital do it Yourself (DiDIY) project. Besides Marco being a really nice guy to talk to, the DiDIY project has everything to do with the theme of your talk and bridging the gap between the information and physical worlds in an open way.
